Many years ago, I lived in a town in Arizona called Sierra Vista. My husband was in the Army, and I had just learned my best friend used to be a cat breeder. She spoke of her cats fondly and talked about the shows she was in. She bred Siamese cats and was skilled at picking out the best ones when they were kittens. Many breeders used to go to her for help in choosing the perfect kitten because they were emotionally attached and unable to look at them objectively. Through our conversations, I became more and more interested in getting my own pedigreed cat. I had only ever owned strays or cats that were randomly bred.
I started doing research to see which breed would be right for me, and I soon stumbled across the Turkish Angora. I was immediately taken in by their elegant appearance, and the more I learned about them, the more I wanted one. Soon afterward, I contacted Barbara Azan of Azima Turkish Angoras. She taught me more about the breed, and she emailed me occasionally to let me know when she had kittens available. I wasn't quite ready for one, but I loved receiving her messages.
It didn't take long for the time to be right though. Within a year, my family had moved to Maryland, and one day, Barbara contacted me that she had some kittens available as well as a silver tabby young adult. I told her I was interested and drove six hours north to visit her home. She had Turkish Angoras everywhere, and they were breathtaking! Some of her cats were featured on an Animal Planet show called Cats 101. She introduced me to two kittens she had available: a black smoke tabby and a silver mackerel tabby. I fell in love with the black smoke kitten and told her it was the one I wanted. I also told her I wanted the silver mackerel young adult she told me about in her email. That cat took a little more effort to find as she was very shy and hiding from us.
Once home, these cats stole my heart immediately. I named the black smoke Aiko and the silver tabby Crystal. They were playful and inquisitive but also dignified. Aiko, especially, became very important to me. She was my heart cat. Because of her, I decided I would always own a Turkish Angora.
In 2015, I started thinking about and making plans to become a Turkish Angora breeder. In May 2020, I purchased two kittens to be my foundation females, and they came home in September 2020. In October 2020, I was gifted a young adult black male from Jo Ann Lynch to be my foundation stud.
These cats aren't just for breeding though. They're pets first and foremost and valuable members of my family. This is as it should be.
It's important to me that each of my cats are titled to prove they're worthy of being bred. For this reason, each of them is shown in the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA). Aiyana quickly proved herself by becoming a Triple Champion and being in the Final in every ring she's been in. She'll be a Grand Champion in Fall 2021 after she's raised her first litter of kittens. Malia and Haji both became Champions at their first shows as well, but because neither of them enjoyed being shown, they won't have to go to any more.
My goal is to breed healthy cats with delightful temperaments that are a stellar example of their breed. I want to preserve the Turkish Angora for future generations.
